In Loving Memory

JAMES ANDREW
BLACKSTOCK

1950 ~ 2026

James Andrew Blackstock passed away peacefully on February 14th. Born in 1950 in Philadelphia, PA, James was affectionately known as “Jimmy” and “B” by family and friends. James is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his daughter Mary and her husband Ed, and his granddaughter Sofia. He was brother to sister Joan, brother-in-law to Bernadette, and uncle to Jennifer and her husband Matt, Stephanie and her husband Andy, and great-uncle to their son Sam. He was predeceased by his brother Paul. James was a beloved son and had a cherished extended family.

A big-hearted, fun-loving, highly intelligent person, James was known for his kind spirit and witty sense of humor. A pillar of the community, he opened the science store, Out of this World, in Mendocino, CA, with his wife in the late eighties. Known for his charitable nature, James, with his wife, supported numerous charities and was a sponsor of the Mendocino Music Festival. An amateur astronomer and photographer, James was fond of stargazing and taking photos along the Northern California coastline, and he had a great passion for baseball, cars, and music.

Having lived in Northern California since the mid-seventies, James loved the outdoors and was fond of nature hikes, camping, abalone diving, and hang gliding in his younger years. He was also an animal lover and enjoyed walking his dog in Mendocino, his home for nearly forty years.

James was loved by all who knew him, and his charming smile, laughter, compassion, and boundless generosity will be dearly missed.

There will be a private gathering for the family.

My Dad and I always had the best time on our many, many road trips, driving through the mountains on "windy roads with trees," talking, laughing, and listening to (very loud) music.

Little did I know Jimmy would become my hero at 5 years old. We were walking home from school, and since I was 10, I was the protector. Three teenagers were walking towards us, and saw me holding my bank book. Well, they started hitting us to take my book. Jimmy changed from a 5-year-old to a hero. He hit, he kicked, he pushed. Jimmy had them on the run. He was always there when I needed him. I loved him, admired him, and will miss him so much.

There came a year when Jimmy and I realized there was no Santa Claus. Paul, our baby brother, still believed, and we were not going to ruin the dream. Jim came up with the idea that we would tell Paul we caught Santa in the act of leaving gifts. We put on a good act and saved Santa for Paul for one more year.

Jim loved cars, so who better to teach me than Jim? Well, one beautiful Sunday, he drove me to an empty parking lot for my first lesson. Out of nowhere came a policeman to ticket Jim for going through an invisible stop sign. Last driving lesson with Jim.
